Hanna-Mari and Alejandro spent two days at the scientific retreat of the PhD program "i-Target 2.0 – immunotargeting of cancer". They enjoyed many interesting scientific talks, plus the location was fantastic!

Joao and Augusto finished their P3 lab training!

Hanna-Mari gave Joao and Augusto green light to work autonomously in our safety level P3 laboratory after many supervised practice sessions.
Guest speaker Dr. Michelle Vincendeau

We had the pleasure to hear a very interesting talk about human endogenous retroviruses by Dr. Vincendeau. It turns out, they make out 8 % of the human genome! Hanna-Mari invited her over the infect-net network.
After the talk, PhD and Post-Doc. students had the opportunity to discuss the topic with her in a relaxed atmosphere over a pizza lunch.

MvPI graduate school retreat

Alejandro took part in this year's retreat of the Postgraduate Program “Infection Research on Human Pathogens@MvPI”. The group went to a wonderful alpine hut in Tyrol, Austria. Besides the usual scientific talks, there was also a guided hike to explore the nearby mountains.
Cold Spring Harbor – Retroviruses 2023

Hanna-Mari and João attended the Cold Spring Harbor annual conference on retroviruses. The Viiral Lab got to present new data showing progress towards a humanised rabbit model for HIV research. João's trip overseas was made possible by the travel grant from the graduate school of the MvPI, thanks for that!
Excursion to the LGL of Bavaria

Alejandro attended an excursion to the Health and Food Safety Authority of Bavaria (LGL; Bayerisches Landesamt für Gesundheit und Lebensmittelsicherheit) at their facilities in Oberschleißheim, close to Munich. FEMClub Spring Event

Hanna-Mari attended the FEMClub Spring event at Leogang organised by Prof. Nathalie Albert (LMU). FEM stands for female excellence in medicine.
The Viiral Lab has a new office!

Our former seminar room had to be spontaneously repurposed to office space in March 2020 to ensure proper distancing amid the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic outbreak. Now, with the groups at the Max von Pettenkofer Institute expanding, the room has been remodelled to a permanent office and it looks great!
Symposium on HIV Immunology, Vaccine, and Cure Research

The Baldauf lab was represented by Hanna-Mari and Luca, who gave talks at this fist symposium organized by the Institute for Translational HIV Research (ITHF) of the University Hospital Essen (UK Essen).
The first F.A.M.E event

F.A.M.E. is a newly founded network of female university professors at the LMU Medical Faculty, that fosters female careers and prepares the next generation of female leaders in academic medicine. Hanna-Mari took part in the kick-off event of this promising network. Read more under:

Annual meeting of the Society for Virology
28 – 31 March 2023, Ulm
The Baldauf group attended the annual meeting of the Society for Virology, with João and Luca presenting a poster each. During the meeting, the first jGfV session was held and the 2nd on-site jGfV Board meeting took place. Congratulations to João and Luca for being finalists at the science slam competition of the jGfV! And on top, Hanna-Mari was chairing the plenary session "Exciting discoveries of young virologists".
ViReady workshop of the ACHIEVE program

A total of 30 participants attended the ViReady workshop of the ACHIEVE program. Among them, Hanna-Mari and our former lab member Yanis. Hanna-Mari even chaired the science communication session with an input talk!

Hanna-Mari attended the event together with Alejandro, who presented a poster on the new developments of our VLP-based strategy to fight against chemotherapy resistance in AML patients.

Alejandro's talk at the 2023 Add-on meeting of the Joachim Herz Stiftung

Alejandro travelled this past weekend to the Joachim Herz Stiftung's headquarters in Hamburg to meet the other new fellows in the Add-on program. He also had the opportunity to present his project on Vpx-mediated SAMDH1 degradation in front of an interdisciplinary crowd of young scientists.

Robert Koch Awardee Laureats 2022

Hanna-Mari attended the Alumni Symposium of the Robert Koch Postdoc Prize awardees and the Robert Koch foundation prize award ceremony in Berlin. It was a great pleasure to listen also to this year's award winners Prof. Dr. Philipp Felgner and Prof. Dr. Drew Weissman and lifetime medal recipient Prof. Dr. Jörg Hacker. We would also like to congratulate this year's Postdoc prize awardees Moritz Gaidt, Anna Both and Robin Wratil from our neighbouring Keppler lab.

Lab excursion to Kloster Andechs

After a 2 year break due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, AG Baldauf relaunched its yearly social event. This time we opted for the renown hike towards Kloster Andechs starting at Ammersee lake. Hanna-Mari kindly invited us to some beers and Bavarian specialties at the top and we enjoyed multiple fun card games until sunset. Looking forward to next year's event!

Hanna-Mari and Ramya had the great opportunity to join the final retreat of the graduate program i-Target, held at the Fraueninsel at Chiemsee, a beautiful lake in Bavaria. Ramya also gave a presentation on parts of her work and they both had a wonderful time networking with young and senior scientists from the program.

We recently celebrated the achievements of Prof. Cynthia Sharma and Prof. Chase Beisel, who won this years Pettenkofer Price for their work on "Innovative methods for the diagnosis of viral infections". The prestigious award ceremony took place at the new City Hall at the heart of Munich, Marienplatz.
